Fanzine Marketing Graphics

Project Description

I lead and participated in various fanzine projects from idea conception through creation and fulfillment by designing logos and promotional graphics to market the projects in addition to formatting the PDFs for digital distribution and, in some cases, physical print production.

Context

Fanzines are unofficial magazines produced by creative enthusiasts of a fandom (a community of fans of a particular person, subject, or media) to be distributed to other fans. Project teams typically consist of a head moderator who leads the project and the mod team, various task-specific moderators, and contributors who create the main content of the fanzines and any merchandise sold alongside it.

My Process

Graphics

When designing the fanzine titles, I like to take inspiration from both the design style and themes of the original work in addition to the themes of the fanzine project itself. When I'm not acting as the head moderator leading the project, I also like to ask for feedback specifically from the project leader as well in order to make sure that they are happy with the direction of the fanzine's graphics.

Certain graphics that almost every fanzine project releases include interest check results, countdown reminders for various phases of the project, as well as contributor and product spotlights. When approaching each graphic, I take into account both the official design style of the original work and the design themes of the fandom project. Of course, grabbing the viewer's attention, seamlessly communicating information, and adhering to social media platform file size limits are also contributing factors.Further, in thanks to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects, I'm able to add bits of motion to the graphics I create.

Formatting

When it comes to designing the layout of each fanzine, I do my best to continue along the same theming as the graphics of each project.Even though the designs may be adjusted over time, I do my best to keep the main design themes and aesthetics intact throughout the project in order to keep a cohesive graphical look and feel. Also, in addition to deciding which general content pages and information to include and where, I usually try to determine the placements of submitted works based on an overarching theme or by ordering content chronologically.

After using Adobe Photoshop to make any necessary edits to illustration submissions, I prepare the files to be imported into Adobe InDesign. I then format all of the works into a singular PDF file that is distributed digitally and, potentially, also physically, in which case I would export a file to be sent to the project's manufacturer of choice to be physically printed and sold to the public.

Mobile Game Advertisements

Project Description

I developed marketing content ideas and transformed creative briefs into static and video advertisements for the mobile game Two Dots during my time working for Take-Two Interactive as well as currently for Cell to Singularity for my current employer, Computer Lunch, with the goal of attracting new players to the games.

RoleClientTimeframeSoftware
Marketing DesignerTake-Two Interactive | Computer Lunch2021 - CurrentAfter Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma

Context

As with any live mobile game, Two Dots and Cell to Singularity were both mobile applications that wanted to be advertised to a larger audience in attempts to convert new players to support the game.I was tasked with interpreting creative briefs to design and animate advertisements with the goal of reaching potential new players in addition to contributing my own ideas during brainstorming sessions.

My Process

During the creative ideation phase, I try to think of both iterative ideas based on previously tested concepts that performed well and follow current trends in addition to new ideas in order to gather more data. After receiving my briefs, I plan out how I want the creatives to look based on the themes and content of the brief, and once I've exported my files, I submit them for review for approval before officially uploading them.I always prepare the files I make in varying aspect ratios to accommodate for different advertising platforms.

Game Symphony Orchestra Branding

Project Description

Design a logo and create brand guidelines for Rochester Institute of Technology's student-run Game Symphony Orchestra club in addition to creating promotional materials to market the club to potential members and the public.

Lead DesignerRIT GSO ClubFall 2017Illustrator, InDesign

Context

RIT Game Symphony Orchestra is an active student-run orchestra club at Rochester Institute of Technology that focuses on playing music from video game soundtracks. They began recruiting members in 2017, and they needed a fresh club brand to promote themselves both to potential student members as well as the general public.Being a designer and one of the founding members of the club, I volunteered to create the logo and brand guidelines that future members could follow moving forward.

My Process

Research & Planning

I began my logo design process by researching the logos of other video game orchestra groups in order to understand what already exists and to determine current trends.

Design & Iterations

After showing my first couple of iterations that were met with mixed reception, I pursued new inspiration, which I eventually found in the form of the power button symbol. In the end, I integrated the power button symbol with the silhouette of a violin, and after a couple of final tweaks, the new logo design I created was officially approved.
